Waste Management Inc. said Monday it plans to add 60 renewable energy facilities across the country over the next five years.
The Houston-based waste company currently has nearly 300 sites managing the disposal of millions of tons of waste per year.
Waste Management (NYSE: WMI) said the new facilities, which will capture methane gas from decomposing landfill waste, will generate more than 700 megawatts of clean renewable energy, or enough to power 700,000 homes or replace more than eight million barrels of oil per year.
Waste Management designed and operated its first landfill-gas-to-energy facility in the United States more than 20 years ago.
